Do you suffer from frequent headaches? Have you been diagnosed with migraines, tension headaches, PMS headaches or any other form of headache? A migraine attack can be debilitating, making even the simplest tasks impossible. Maybe you can still power through your day, but at what cost? You know you're not alone - it is estimated that more than 10% of the population suffers from migraines, myself included!
Let me share here my treatment approach, strategies that work for me and for my clients!
Consider Supplements
Make sure you are getting enough Magnesium, Vit B2, CoQ10 and Omega 3's. I will review your current supplements with you and create a plan to get you started. Here are some of my current recommendations:
Magnesium - 500mg daily - I use Mg-citrate or Mg-taurate
Vitamin B2 - 400mg daily
CoQ10 - 200mg daily
Omega-3 fatty acids - aim for total of 1,000mg of EPA/DHA daily
Get Acupuncture
Multiple clinical studies show that acupuncture can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. I typically recommend at least 4-6 sessions to my clients to get started, and I always include personalized herbal formulas to match their constitution. As TCM practitioners we look at each person's patterns and underlying constitution, and we construct our treatment approach accordingly.
The magic of Chinese Medicine works on multiple levels: During acupuncture sessions, you will experience immediate relief from pain, tension, and stress. You will sleep better, and as a result, have more energy and resilience. At the same time, we work on addressing the root causes of your condition, helping you to return to a state of balance.
Get Moving
Regular exercise can be beneficial for those looking to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. Exercise promotes circulation, strengthens the immune system, and can help manage stress levels, which is a significant trigger for migraines. However, start slowly, especially if you haven't exercised in a while. Aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming, and cycling can be a great place to start. Yoga is another option, moving your body together with your breath for a mind-body experience.
Focus on Your Diet
One of the most effective ways to manage your migraines is to pay close attention to what you eat and drink. Some trigger foods such as caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, cheese, and processed foods have been linked to migraines. Try keeping a food diary and tracking what you eat before and during a migraine attack to see if there are any patterns. Additionally, incorporating more anti-inflammatory foods such as ginger, turmeric, fatty fish, and dark leafy greens may provide some relief.
During my client meetings, I often encounter a lot of hesitation around diet changes - it can feel daunting to change many things at once and to give up much-beloved food items. But not to worry, we will create a plan together that you can stick with!
Conclusion:
Migraines are a frustrating and challenging medical condition to live with, but there are natural treatment options that can help. By making small changes to your diet, exercise regimen, and lifestyle habits, you may be able to alleviate the pain and frequency of migraines. I am confident that we will discover the treatment combination that works for you!
